    Scorpinac says:

Roddy’s planning to fill in the hole, isn’t he?

  2. Thorin Mason Schmidt says:

My money is on him rescuing one or both girls from that dreadful ‘accident’. Thus securing his chances of marriage, as well as making sure Philo won’t be coming back up to dispute his ambition for Lordship.

He needs both things to succeed in his plans, I think.

He seemed fairly confident they’d all die from his sabotage, and a rescue operation would be extremely risky if he honestly believed there would be survivors (because Philo could be among them). It seems more likely he’s mounting a false rescue operation with the actual intent of bringing back evidence of Philo’s demise so his father has no choice but to recognize him as heir. Although with his personality, I’d imagine he’s up to something else. It looks like he may be setting up a water wheel to do some sort of work (hence the wheel and the ropes), but to what end I appear to lack the imagination to guess.

    • Grim Robot says:

Your guesses sounds plausible. I wonder what comes next! Ohhh… Wait… as the author, I already know. That takes all the fun out of it 🙁

    Frank says:

    Looks like a rescue attempt.

LOOKS like one. That doesn’t mean there IS one.

  4. Thorin Mason Schmidt says:

MMMMM. Yes, a food ‘rescue’ attempt would be just the thing to ally Father’s suspicions AND once exryone’s deaths are ‘confirmed’, then nothing would delay Roddy’s ambitions…. OOh, clever. Is it too late to re-place my bet?

    RyGuy says:

I don’t see what good that will do. The hole is always going to be softer than the surrounding soil so the drill going back the way it came will always be easier. If he’s planning on filling it with water, well, I’m sure Philo accounted for the possibility of passing through underground rivers, so would have waterproofed the system as best he could. Most likely, if he tries that, Roddy is going to get in big trouble with Parliament and the Crown (although I think Victoria’s mother was ruling at the time as Queen regent while she was still a little girl) for draining the Thames!

    • S
      Scorpinac says:

Victoria’s mom never sat as regent. Victoria’s predecessor, William IV, managed to stay alive until a few weeks after Voctoria turned 18, thus avoiding it, and Victoria went straight onto the throne. So if this is before Victoria succeeded then it would be William Roddy would have issues with on that.

Philo should have used his genius to build his father a lift of some sort. Seems all he has been able to focus on is to find a way to escape his situation.
