Each convict is given an old shovel. And a very small light in form of a lifebelt. Plus a chart of the known layers of earth from here to Tillington. After all, we’re humans, aren’t we?
Again we see PHILO (again, thanks for the correction) in his element. Unhappy, certainly. But he knows he can’t do anything to change it, so he moves with it and even quips.
(*BC voice* Philo has quips!)
I wonder how many people know what I’m talking about without any Internet searches.
Ah, Charlie: truly an “up-for-anything” kind of kid, as long as it doesn’t include needlework or having to wear shoes. Come now, Philo, if it had to be one of them (and we all were certain that it was going to be at least one of them, if not both), isn’t it better that it’s Charlie rather than Alice? After all, Alice would have made difficulties while being angry and taking it out on you for the entire trip. Charlie will still make plenty of difficulties, I’m sure, but she’ll think it’s all great fun and not blame you one bit! Much the better travel companion!
“How would walking the plank work when travelling underground?” You would either have to stop the Driller and come up with a way to drill first a perpendicular shaft followed with a secondary parallel shaft. Then have her fall into that. Or set the plank on the boiler level and have her fall onto where her and Roddy came in through the drill but that would make a mess inside the Driller.
I guess turning around would work for the top level, at least I assume that’s what the gears and track are for, a sort of Gymbal-leveling system? But, I pity the poor sods on the engine levels who’ll have to work in an upside-down driller.
Too bad they didn’t think to build a “reverse” into the design….
engineering deck is mounted gyroscope style so no matter how the driller is oriented it’s right side up and level. Makes power transfer a bit of a pain in the arse.
OH, hey, I love how all the furniture is bolted down. Nice touch there!
I also think it speaks to Philo’s method of thinking, that he padded the door, in case of turbulence, so no one would get hurt, and then placed a bloody huge iron ring in the middle of it for a door handle…

Sounds about as survivable as walking-the-plank at sea. So, yes!

The super-intelligent readers of Unearth don’t need to rely on Google!
That’s right! we use Bing!
Oh, you’re the ones.
Dear Charlie has been reading to many sailing stories, I reckon.
Pirate tales! Aaaargh!

She’s also a better travel companion for the readers of this webcomic.
It’s the little things that amuse me most.
“You have a plank?’
“Sadly, no.”
They must’ve left it on land to make a diving board for the pool they’re drilling… What, you didn’t realize that was the plan all along?
“How would walking the plank work when travelling underground?”
You would get very dirty.
And not as wet.
Yay, I’m finally back after having my SO blow up on me (figuratively). Had to reinstall everything and go after the comics I used to follow.
This comic is still awesome mr. van Dinter. Keep it up. The only thing I miss is a prologue.

“No, we’re turning around and dropping you off back on the surface!”
I’m glad someone has the welfare of the children as their top concern!

Oh, that’s not a problem, they have a Flywheel!
Does he have another choice?
See Aslandus’s reply above. (He’s concerned about the child’s safety)

The door padding is for sound-proofing. It seems to have been a common feature of executive offices way back when.
Huh, that’s pretty cool. Now Alice can yell at him in private….
CabinBoy!Charlie is awesome.
Yes, but she’ll have to take on Godfrey in a fight to the death first.
Godfrey will secede his position in favor of becoming a fireman.
The type that extinguishes fires or starts them?
