Let me guess. It could be that no one actually was maimed or killed… at least not this time. Or it could be that what is relevant to the story is that Alice consider him capable of such.
I like how Charlie’s stance and expression clearly convey her “respect” for Roderick. Charlie and Alice may disagree about a lot of things, but Roderick evidently isn’t one of them.
Arrrrgh. That should be “Alice considers him”.
I think you hit the nail right on the head with both guesses!

Some versions of the tale I’ve seen performed, it seems he’s needed supernatural aid (to my way of thinking, not in the play/opera/dance) because his personality is truly nauseating. Much like Roderick here. Yet he has a different woman in his bed every night (or he’s in one of theirs). Different tastes? Wishful thinking on some writers’ parts? Satanic intervention? (Again, wishful thinking on some writers’ parts?)
Isn’t all fiction ‘wishful thinking’? As for this author, mostly I wish I was being paid to write this comic so I could quit my day job.
As a Roderick, I have mixed feelings about this page. :p
I sympathize. As a Van Dinter, I have mixed feelings about Martin Van Buren, Dick Van Dyke, and Eddie Van Halen 😉
